The naming of significant natural features by Europeans would have commenced in the Mildura area with the first explorers and squatters arriving around 1840.
The advent of steam driven river boat traffic on the Murray river from the mid 1850’s saw the mapping of the river with its significant features being named. By the late 1880’s newspaper articles from Mildura were referring to the large sweeping bend located adjacent a large billabong upstream of Mildura as “Psyche Bend” and it was on this bend in 1891 that the Chaffeys located their primary lift pump to pump water into the Kings Billabong, this pumping station is known as the Psyche Pumps.
In Greek Mythology Psyche was the goddess of soul and her story is one of the most fascinating of the legends.
The Mildura Irrigation Colony was founded on temperance principles with the hope that settlers would opt for the European drinking tradition of fine wines in moderation, rather than excessive consumption of spirits.
In 1888 the Chaffey Brothers established Chateau Mildura to produce such wines.
A selection of the best quality wines have been released under the Psyche Reserve label.
